Information below is for residence halls that
either has a website or is interested in one.
1. Halls that currently have a website
+ 1835 Hinman, Allison Hall,
North Mid-Quads Hall, Healthy Living Unit, Sigma Alpha Iota,
and Elder Hall currently has a directory on
http://groups.northwestern.edu
+ If you have a webmaster, and
your site is currently working, your hall is set to go.
+ However, most halls probably
need access to the website.
Please go to http://
asg.northwestern.edu/news/2005.11.13.server/ and
fill in needed information to regain access to the site. Logging
in to the server is done by using the NetID, so be sure the main
person (webmaster) to take care of the
website fill out the information. Your short group name
is the domain that goes after
groups.northwestern.edu/ and can be found by going to the
groups directory. (at
http://groups.northwestern.edu)
2. Halls that would like a new website
A. How to get started.
+ As there are regulations from
Northwestern Residential Life from making a
website out of the Northwestern
server, there are two ways to create a
website.
++ One. Build
on top of the current RHA
website. All webpages will be
sent to me, then it will be uploaded in the following directory:
http://groups.northwestern.edu/rha/(hallname
) Please email me back if you would like this option.
++ Two. Create
a separate account under the groups server. Because the ASG
groups directory has not recovered its groups management site
online, you will need to send an email to
asg-technology@northwestern.edu with the following
information.
+++ First name, Last name,
group name(as it will appear after
groups.northwestern.edu/), Group full name(The full hall
name), President's name, email, webmaster's name, and email. If
the president will take care of the
website, please indicate so. You have to make sure that
the first and last name, and your email is same with the
information in the Northwestern directory, as only current
Northwestern undergraduates will gain access to the group server
with their own NetID.
+ Once you have set up an
account, visit
http://asg.northwestern.edu/services/technology/webhosting/ to
download the proper program for uploading sites onto the server.
+ If you really want to make a
website out of the Northwestern
server, visit
http://www.free-webhosts.com/no-forced-ads.php.
RHA can not recommend any
particular service. Even if your hall has a
website from outside the
university server, the website on
the groups directory will still be
groups.northwestern.edu/yourhall. You can create a
forwarding index page to make it go to your site outside
Northwestern server.
B. Making your website.
+ Residence Hall Association
would like to recommend that you have information about your
hall on your website if possible.
We are trying to make each hall have more of its own
characteristic than just dimensions and specifications. It's
your hall, it should be unique. If you have trouble on how to
get started, visit some websites below. (from other schools)
http://web.mit.edu/housing/undergrad/mccormick.html
http://www.rh.uchicago.edu/hds/housing/halls/pierce2.php
http://www.collegehouses.upenn.edu/house_info/harrison.html
+ Some things to include on
your website: munchies, pictures
of the dorms, maybe even rooms, dorm atmosphere, features,
characteristics, events, minutes from the meetings, and features
that the residences may request.
+ PHP coding and more on
website goodies can be found in
www.php.net
+ Northwestern logo, search,
banner, and header images/regulations can be found in
http://www.northwestern.edu/univ-relations/web_comm/.
Just remember to follow these guidelines if you feel
like the website should contain a
logo, if not, the design in up to
you and your dorm's executive board.
+ If you would like to discuss
further on what to put on the website,
or need help organizing the pages, please email me at
joshuawasserman2007@u.northwestern.edu or visit
http://pubweb.northwestern.edu/~cyu253/. (some
information on the site may be outdated)
C. Updating information on the groups
website
+ Information on the executive
board of your halls will be updated on the groups
website. If you are not asked for
this information directly, you do not have to send them the
information. I will send out an email to the ASG technology
director by this quarter or the beginning of the next quarter
with information on the executive board positions of each
residence hall that has a website
for the main student groups directory.
